Benson Australia

 Benson Australia - Redfern

"... pay (in cash): 9 dollars for training period, 10 dollars for normal workng hours. No contract between staff and company. No notice given or compensation for staff leave, no super and no other benefits."

Bolinda Audio

Bolinda Audio

Location: Tullamarine, VIC

"They paid below minimum wage and did not give sick leave or holiday pay for the first six months. They also did not pay super and have been successfully sued through the Fair Work Ombudsman for bullying and pay issues. I would not recommend this employer for any student."

Bolinda Publishing

Bolinda Publishing

Location: Tullamarine, VIC

"I worked for Bolinda Publishing in Tullamarine for a period of about * months. They were paying below award wage, and also terminated the employment of a person who questioned them about this...

This happened to many people not just me. They are terrible employers, and often advertise for new staff via the Uni of Melbourne career portal."

David Lawrence

David Lawrence

Location:

"David Lawrence, under Webster Holdings, does not pay the appropriate overtime, and forces staff to purchase hundreds of dollars worth of clothing to try and make their sales look better... They also randomly remove money from paychecks - which is extremely illegal- to "motivate" people to work harder."

Egg Sake Bistro

Egg Sake Bistro

Location: University of Melbourne, VIC

"Egg Sake Bistro inside University of Melbourne's Student Union, VIC - Paid an atrocious $12 an hour with no staff benefits or discounts."

Fiesta Mexican Restaurant

Fiesta Mexican Restaurant

Location: South Yarra, VIC

"They paid me $12 an hour cash, with no loading whatsoever. When I asked to be put on the books, and to be paid award wages, there were suddenly no shifts available for me.... I know that most of the other workers were also underpaid."

Melbourne Central Medical

Melbourne Central Medical

Location: Melbourne, VIC

"Melbourne Central Medical inside Melbourne Central, VIC - Refused to pay for work during training period despite negotiations."

Metro Baguette

Metro Baguette

Location: Corner Flinders and Elizabeth streets, Melbourne, VIC

"These are some of the illegal practices that take place

  • Workers are asked to work for up to 18 hours straight
  • No superannuation is paid - yet it is subtracted from each paycheck
  • Award wages for Sundays and public holidays are not paid
  • Adequate recovery time between shifts is not given (eg rostered to work til 12:45 am, then start at 6am)
  • Training - up to three shifts - is unpaid
  • Workers are paid as little as $12 an hour
  • Timesheets are often 'lost', and the shifts recorded on them not paid for
  • Overtime is rarely paid
Overall the amount of work staff are expected to do is extreme, stressful, and finishing what is expected each shift on time is near impossible. Staff feel guilty about taking breaks, knowing that this will strain their coworkers, and so will often do shifts up to 12 hours without a break to even sit down."

Organi BlackList

Organi

Location: Doncaster and Highpoint, VIC

" 'It's only natural to care'

They are underpaying their staff - $100 a day, day can be up to 12 hours long, depending on store (Doncaster and Highpoint) hours. I knew my rights, and when I confronted them they fired me, though others are still working for nothing for them."

"While applying for work at SES Fashions Penrith, the hourly rate was

$11 and it was conditional to fill out a tax form."

Singapore House

Singapore House

Location: Glen Osmond Rd, Frewville, Adelaide, SA

"My first two weeks were unpaid as a 'trial period' and after that I was put on at $12/hr, after much insisting. I was always paid cash with no tax or super taken out, never received a payslip and I have not received a group certificate from them now that the financial year has ended. When I started work I was 17, but turned 18 while I was working for them. My pay did not increase after my birthday. There were a few other students working there, some of them Indian/Pakistani and they were being paid $10. They were unable/did not complain from fear of losing their jobs and not being able to find another."

Smoken Joes

Smoken Joes

 Location: Moonee Ponds, VIC

"They didn't let me go on the books telling me I'd need another job too, then they paid me $12.50 p/hour as an adult inclusive of weekends and public holidays which they expected me to work even though I had gotten another job that was on the books and would pay me a lot more on those days. Poorly managed and poorly paid, the staff have been there for far too long and the place is falling to bits and needs an entire overhaul."

Store 6

Store 6

Location: South Melbourne Markets, VIC

"Pay is $16 cash in hand, which is ok, but you don't get a break! Even if you work for 10 hours. And you never know what time you are finishing. There is also workplace bullying."

Sumo Salad

Sumo Salad

"No contract or knowledge of OH and S procedures... cash $8 an hour."

Stacks On

Stacks On

Location: Royal Randwick Shopping Centre, NSW

"Stacks On, a sandwich shop in the Royal Randwick Shopping Centre is nothing if not a nightmare for students seeking casual employment. The wage is as low as $12 per hour cash with the first-3 -day trial unpaid. absolutely no weekend or casual loading. The work conditions are the worst I've ever experienced so far. There's not even first-aid available. My colleague once got burnt by the hot bar light, but the boss forbade her to seek first aid from other shops in fear of being reported and (subsequent) legal obligations. Hygiene is way down below the standard."

Taco Bell - Camberwell

Taco Bell - Camberwell

 Location: Camberwell, VIC

"$10 an hour for a 20-year-old for a 'training period' of vague time. Cash-in-hand. I was told after training I would be getting $16, still low but acceptable. After I had worked here for over 20 shifts, and was definitely trained, they didn't raise my wage. Upon further asks it was raised to $12 an hour and I was asked to leave a week later. The girl who replaced me, said she was getting paid $9(!!!) an hour...”

 The Coffee Club - Innaloo

The Pancake Parlour

The Pancake Parlour - Melbourne

 Location: Melbourne, VIC

"- $11/hr for your probationary period, which lasts 3 months.

- No increased wages for weekend work and only an extra 20% on public holidays.
- If you forget a piece of your uniform with the logo on it (apron, hat) you have to buy a new one for that shift.
- No guaranteed hours unless you are a cook or a supervisor
- Frequently understaffed due to management trying to save on wages
- Generally no finishing time
- Staff can be made to do tasks which do not fall under their job description (Eg. A waiter being told to do the dishes, unpack a delivery or do tasks in the kitchen)

... you can be sent home after 2 hours if it's quiet..."
